End of 2007 Aleh Hladzilin published the 2x2x2 Circle Cube.
The 2x2x2 Circle Cube is based on a 4x4x4 Eastsheen mechanism, but because of the circle shape of the inner pieces, they are not moving together with the outer ring all the time. This design needs some knowledge about the 4x4x4 mechanism to understand the why sometimes the centers are moving together with the outer ring and when not.
